Why & How to Get an ADR Licence

2 Mins read

According to UK law, you must possess an ADR licence, or the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, if you are operating a vehicle carrying dangerous goods.

Professionals can transfer a greater range of commodities around the UK and to other countries in the European Union securely and lawfully with an ADR licence.

You wouldn’t be allowed to travel borders without this licence, and you might get in trouble if you drove while carrying specific types of merchandise.

The Importance of Having an ADR Licence

Anyone operating a vehicle carrying hazardous items, such as radioactive, toxic, or flammable goods, needs an ADR permit. After obtaining your certification and the related accreditations, you will be able to transport a greater variety of potentially hazardous items, like:

  • Explosives
  • Gases
  • Flammable Liquids
  • Flammable Solids
  • Oxidising Substances
  • Toxic Substances
  • Radioactive Substances
  • Corrosive Substances
  • Miscellaneous Substances

ADR licences are crucial since they contribute to the highest level of safety for all users of the road. In the context of heavy-duty vehicles, drivers may be tasked with moving an enormous variety of commodities.

Because of their size, all HGVs are marginally more unsafe than a standard automobile, but those carrying hazardous items can be more perilous.

How to Get an ADR Licence

Now don’t think too much about how to get an ADR licence because now things get easier for you people. Obtaining your CPC certificate and finishing your HGV training are prerequisites for obtaining an ADR licence. You can begin taking ADR driver training as soon as you receive your HGV certificate; there is no set time limit to wait.

A training course, which typically lasts several days, is a part of the training process. You will discover during the training period the risks associated with transporting hazardous materials and how to take precautions before every trip to avoid mishaps.

Along with getting step-by-step instructions on how to use your HGV safely, you’ll also learn how to protect the environment and other people around you.

What is an ADR Training Courses

Prior to scheduling your course, please confirm that your selected training provider has the Department for Transport’s approval, as all training programmes in the UK require it.

The ADR course is usually divided into modules, and the one you take depends on the kind of work you currently perform, what you want to accomplish, and the hazardous items you plan to carry.

  • Class 2 – Gases
  • Class 3 – Flammable Liquids
  • Class 4 – Flammable Solids
  • Class 5 – Oxidising Agents
  • Class 6 – Toxic Substances
  • Class 8 – Corrosives
  • Class 9 – Miscellaneous

It should be noted that Class 1 explosives and Class 7 radioactive are often conducted as distinct modules and are not covered in an ADR training programme.

You must pass the multiple-choice tests with a passing score of 70%. In the unlikely event that you fail a module, you will only need to retake that specific one and not the others.

Duration Period of an ADR Training

Initial full-length courses for the “packages” course alone last about 3.5 days; add the “tanks” module, and the total time comes to 5 days. Every refresher training lasts for three days.

Courses on Class-1 Explosives and Class-7 Radioactives take one day if they are added to an already-completed qualification, or two and a half days if they are the only entitlement needed.

Validation Period of an ADR Licence

To be eligible for a licence, candidates must possess a valid driving licence from the UK or Northern Ireland; this licence need not be complete. A refresher course must be completed in the fourth year of the ADR licence’s five-year validity.
